What Is a Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)?

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) refer to a group of conditions that affect the jaw joints, the muscles that move the jaw, and the way the upper and lower teeth function together.

Common symptoms may include:

Jaw pain or soreness
Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw
Facial tension or muscle fatigue
Headaches or neck discomfort
Difficulty opening comfortably or moving the jaw smoothly
Clenching or grinding of the teeth
Changes in the way the bite feels

TMD often develops gradually and is rarely caused by a single issue. Symptoms may fluctuate over time and can be influenced by joint stress, muscle overuse, inflammation, posture, breathing patterns, and habitual behaviors such as clenching or grinding.

Because TMD can involve multiple systems working together, effective care requires thoughtful evaluation rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

Our Approach to TMD Care

Temporomandibular disorders develop over time and are rarely the result of a single cause. Jaw joint pain, clicking or popping, headaches, facial tension, and limitations in movement often reflect a combination of inflammation, joint stress, muscular imbalance, and long-term adaptation.

Because of this complexity, our approach to TMD care focuses on rehabilitation rather than compensation.

A Thoughtful, Conservative Model of Care

Our treatment approach is centered on supporting the jaw joint and surrounding tissues while reducing excessive strain on the system. When appropriate, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is utilized to help support healing within the joint and adjacent structures.

PRF allows us to work with the body’s own healing mechanisms rather than relying solely on mechanical intervention. This remains a core part of how we approach TMD care.

Supportive, Non-Invasive Therapies

TMD care often benefits from therapies that support tissue health, reduce inflammation, and improve neuromuscular balance. Depending on clinical findings, care may include:

Daytime and nighttime orthotics to reduce joint strain and stabilize function
Non-invasive laser therapy and photobiomodulation to support tissue response
Red light therapy as an adjunct to support muscular and cellular recovery

Therapies are selected thoughtfully and combined based on individual presentation and response.

The Role of Orthotics

Orthotics are used as supportive tools, not as a cure. Their role is to protect the joint, reduce excessive loading, and provide stability as the system adapts.

They are not intended to create long-term dependency and are incorporated as part of a broader rehabilitative strategy.
